Discover Landscape Architecture Pre-College 2012 Program Dates:
(Follows Architecture Session 1)
Session 2: Sunday, July 8 to Saturday, July 21 2012 (Registration deadline: June 8, 2012)
Overview
Have you heard about Landscape Architecture? If you are a high school junior or senior, or a beginning college student interested in finding out more, or pursuing a career in landscape architecture, Discover Landscape Architecture 2012 is for you! Here is a tailor-made opportunity to learn about the activities, the roles, and the projects that landscape architects enjoy today.
Landscape Architecture is a natural extension for those students with interests in architecture, engineering, or natural resources, and for students with interests in horticulture, environmental design, or visual arts. Similar to Discover Architecture at the University of Illinois, Discovery is based on a design studio-based program. Landscape design projects will be supplemented with daily seminars, demonstrations, slide presentations, films, and field trips, to give students "hands on" experience and the kno wledge of what will be expected of them in college and the profession. This program offers a complete pre-professional immersion experience, and requires students to concentrate on work projects in a mature and serious way. Instruction and activities are scheduled mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Students also have plenty of opportunities for interaction with faculty and other students in the program.
The Department of Landscape Architecture will formally recognize each student's successful completion of Discover Landscape Architecture 2011 with a certificate of completion. Although this does not guarantee admission to the University of Illinois, it is an advantageous credential for any high school student going on to college.
The Department
Recently celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign is among the oldest programs of landscape architecture in the world. With well over 1400 distinguished alumni, many among the best-known and most successful landscape architects in modern history, the Department of Landscape Architecture is a leader in professional development and scholarship. Faculty and teaching assistants from the Department work directly with each student. Enrollment is limited to ensure an extraordinarily low student/instructor ratio of one instructor for every 12-15 students.
Fees
There is a non-refundable $25 application fee for all applicants. For summer 2012, the full program fee for Discover Landscape Architecture is $1300. This fee includes the cost of room and board, drawing supplies and equipment, two books on landscape architecture, a field trip to Columbus, Indiana, and a studio fee. Additional costs for non-academic functions are not included.
Because the program is limited to no more than 25 students for the session, it is important to apply early. All applicants will be notified when their application has been received and accepted. At the time of notification/acceptance to the program, a $100 non-refundable retainer fee must be deposited, which will be applied towards the program fee.
Studio
In Discover Landscape Architecture, the first step is learning to look at landscape, and to understand the many dimensions of the natural and built environment. The design process in the landscape architectural design studio is the primary emphasis of the program. Mornings and afternoons are spent in studio where students apply information from the morning session into their design solutions. Throughout the two weeks, students will work on a series of short design exercises related to a single, comprehensive, landscape architectural design project. Individual instruction, small seminars, and periodic reviews of work will culminate in a final presentation.
Seminars
Each day Landscape Architecture faculty and visiting professionals demonstrate and discuss the design process in landscape architecture.
Films, Slides, Discussions
Evenings are a time of exploration and discussion in a more informal and casual atmosphere. Films and slides introducing students to landscape architects, ideas, and landscape architectural projects are followed by group discussions. Time is also devoted to discussions on landscape architectural education, how to choose a university, and requirements for entering the profession. Students have access to studios during early evening hours to work on design projects for the next day.
Accommodations
Students live and eat in a supervised University residence hall.
